Hello, and thank you so much for taking the time to click on this. I'm not usually the type to ask for things like this but times are tough right now for a lot of people and my loving sister could really use some help.
She didn't ask for this and I haven't told her I'm doing it but I hope it can make some sort of difference. There are two reasons for this fundraiser. The first is to help with any medical costs associated with my niece from last night and the other is to hopefully help with their financial struggles at home.
I know there are currently so many other important issues facing the world right now, and I fully encourage donating to those causes, they definitely need your support!
It can be tough to choose where to donate your hard-earned money so please feel no obligation here, anything helps, even just reading through this, so thank you!
I'll start with the more immediate medical issue:
Yesterday my adorable 2-year-old niece Kehlani suffered second degree burns all over her face from an accident with scalding hot water.
In the middle of the night last night her and my younger sister Samantha were transferred via ambulance from the local ER in Tri-cities Washington to the Harborview ER Burn Unit in Seattle where they are currently taking care of her.
Kehlani has been a trooper through most of it so far and only cried once upon initially being cleaned/treated at the local ER. She is ok, in stable condition, and in good spirits and I don’t think they expect there will be any long-term effects of her burns.
We are currently not sure how much of the bill they will be expected to pay but are hopeful that it won't be too bad.
The current situation and some background:
My younger sister Samantha has always been resilient to hardships, she is an amazing, caring person and a loving mother. She is currently raising 5 children ages 2-9, two of which are special needs, one of those with a very rare genetic disorder known as Costello Syndrome. She has varying degrees of help with child care from local friends and family.
She, like so many others is currently unemployed due to Covid-19. And also like so many others, especially in Washington has yet to receive any unemployment (despite having a claim pretty much when quarantine started in March.)
She has an upcoming court hearing to hopefully get her unemployment benefits including any back pay but there is no guarantee.
Bills are piling up and they are struggling to pay rent, and with what happened last night it just feels like my sister cannot catch a break, she deserves much better. They could really use anything from basic household necessities to a car, so literally any financial help would be a big deal in alleviating burdens.
We were pretty low-income family and didn't have the easiest life growing up and my sister certainly had it worse than myself. She has overcome so much in her life and I could not be more proud of her and her amazing children.
She is truly the strongest person I have ever known and keeps a stoic projection in the face of hardships. But my heart breaks when I see her sadness through the cracks, or hear helplessness in her voice. She does not deserve all the struggles she has had to deal with throughout her life.
No matter what happens, she presses on, she makes it work with what she has. And I could not be more proud.
I love you sis <3
