Hello, I’m Linette. I’ve started this GoFundMe to help my mom. She lost her long-time boyfriend, Rey Padilla, last October (2024), and she is being sued by his brother and sister for a car that Rey sold while she was sick in the hospital for several months. The day mom was getting discharged from the hospital is the same day Rey passed away. She and our family are devastated and are still mourning.

I met Rey’s sister at his funeral. Prior to that, they never came around. The brother never came to Rey’s funeral. Rey only spoke about them discouragingly. He would say he always felt like he wasn’t a part of his own family. They are now the executors of his estate, but he didn’t have anything. They already received money he was getting from a car accident, but they now want money from my mother for the car sale. Rey was on state disability and had no belongings or assets. He was not well in the end and suffered when he passed away.

The sister paid only $50 toward his funeral. The brother paid nothing. My mother and I paid the majority of the funeral cost, with the exception of a collection from other family members and the small Medicaid insurance policy he had. Needless to say, we didn’t mind paying and providing a proper send-off.

But my mother’s pain didn’t end there. She is not allowed to mourn in peace.

I think it’s important to let you know my mother has survived her first husband, her daughter, her son, and her last boyfriend. She also lost her son in 2023. She has had to stay strong through two back-to-back impactful deaths.

She has two daughters left on earth. My sister is ill and cannot work, so I am the only one available to help.

She is on a limited income, retired, and on dialysis. She has many health issues, and the sadness of her deceased family adds to the pressure.

She got a call from an attorney telling her the family is suing her. This was months ago. Now, she is being told that she may be held responsible for the cost of a beat-up old car. But you know how lawyers work. They want the highest possible value of the car, and she is retired, on a limited income, and very ill.

I know it’s a lot to ask, but if there is any way I can help my mom, I always will.

Please help her, and help us get this insatiable family out of our lives.
