Hi, I'm Meagan Hays (Monse).

On Thursday, Sept 23rd at about 6am my dad, Kelly Monse, was hit by a driver who came into his lane while trying to pass another, between Ballinger and Bronte, TX.

The following contains details of the crash as I've been told by police and hospital personnel. Please jump ahead to the *** if you would prefer not to read these details.

Upon impact, Dad was pinned in the driver seat for some time while the truck's e-brake was driven into his thigh, causing significant blood loss. On the scene, Dad was saved by the Ballinger Fire Dept and Volunteer Fire Dept, as they opened up the truck and somehow got Dad on the helicopter to San Angelo. (The other driver was able to leave the scene without medical attention.)

At Shannon in San Angelo, Kelly had surgery to remove the e-brake from his thigh and patch leg vessels to fix the blood flow that had been cut off to his lower leg. Shannon then made the decision to fly Kelly again to University Hospital in San Antonio for orthopedic surgeons to operate on his left hip socket and address other injuries.

*** Kelly is working his way toward rehab for a broken hip, ankle, ribs, sternum, and other injuries here in San Antonio. My mom, Elizabeth, has been by his side daily, three hours from home.

For those who do not know Dad, I want to share this: The day after we arrived in San Antonio, Dad could not talk and was trying to hand-signal something to me that I could not figure out. I got Dad a dry-erase board to write with and his first question was to ask about the other guy. This the perfect depiction of Dad's heart and love for others.

My dad is the last person to ask for help. In fact, I will probably "hear it" later on for setting this up. But the outpouring of love from Ballinger residents, friends, and family has been more than we could have expected, and we were asked about a place to send donations.

For locals in Ballinger, there is a new emergency account under Elizabeth Monse at 1st Community FCU. This gofundme, and any other funds given to our family will be deposited into this account for medical bills and Mom's travel expenses, as needed.

Last thing, any funds left in the account after the insurance gets worked out will be donated to Dad's favorite annual charity, the Runnels County Christmas Toy Run for underprivileged children.
