Rehab for Neglected Dog Deliberately Shot in Texas
June 2022 UPDATE: After our latest appointment with our wonderful new vet, we have some very promising news! Ellie shows promising signs of potential physical recovery. It’s far from guaranteed, but Ellie might stand on all fours again! We will soon be moving forward with rehab at Four Paws to see what her recovery journey might entail.
ORIGINAL STORY:
In August 2021 I decided to foster a wheelchair dog named Elevado (we call her Ellie) from Redemption Paws. Ellie was deliberately shot in Texas and lost a significant amount of function in her hind legs.
Fostering started wonderfully but things took a turn as I attempted to seek care and recovery for her from Redemption Paws, even after offering to pay for rehab myself. For several months they reneged on their prior commitment to arrange a specialist and therapy for Ellie, claiming it was unnecessary as it would not significantly improve her quality of life.
I found out later Redemption Paws had information from a vet that directly contradicted this - in fact, the vet recommended a specialist and physical therapy for Ellie all the way in July 2021. I also found that RP has a long, documented pattern of this failure to disclose and address serious medical issues. The story is long and arduous and can be found online, but it is not my intention to air that out here.
The good news is, I’ve officially adopted Ellie and she is safe and at home with me. She’s changed my life, and being able to witness daily the way she sparks joy in every person she connects with has been the biggest gift.
I am asking for your support to get her the specialist and therapy care she deserves. I feel a lot of pain when I think about all the time and resources wasted that could’ve gone to her therapy, from the moment I first offered to take responsibility for her rehab as her foster in August. It’s not for me to say why this all happened, but what I know is Ellie deserves better.
By donating, you would be supporting sweet angel Ellie in becoming the best dog she can be! Funds would go toward seeing a neurologist, treatment, tests, physical and hydrotherapy, possible surgeries, and her specialized care.
Any extra funds will go toward her future vetting needs, replacement wheelchair/parts, supplies, basically everything Ellie needs to thrive for the rest of her life.
