Regenerating Hackney Bumps

*Update - The project has exceeded all our expectations, so we have decided to majorly up the ante! The results of the polishing and filling in cracks so far have been amazing. We have been putting in new elements at the same time, a 3ft quarter, a ledge, a rail, a slappy curb and most recently a 6ft quarter. It's gone down a storm with the local community and has been featured on Thrasher, the Nine Club, Grey and Free skate mags and Vegan Bones. There's an amazing scene down there now. We've got big plans, give us your money!*
We are the Hackney Bumps Community group, a group of local skaters who have been working voluntarily on regenerating this underused and underfunded public skatepark in Daubeney Fields for over a year now.
The Bumps was built back in 1986. It's impressive that it has survived so well for so long. We are fundraising to pay for the work needed to make sure that it is still there in another 35 years!
We were in talks with a major UK funding body about putting serious investment into this project. Then the virus hit, and sadly all of that got put indefinitely on hold. So we decided we should do it ourselves. Our group has been lucky enough to have help from Betongpark since day one and with their guidance we started work in January.
The surface is rough, cracked and badly in need of repair. We decided that a process of polishing, sealing and localised repairs to the existing concrete is the best plan of action. It is by far the most cost-effective method and as a group we agreed in the unique historic value of restoring the original riding surface to its former glory. If you have visited The Bumps recently you will see the night-to-day results in the regeneration so far – the old, coarse surface being flattened and polished, and actually fun to ride again! Not to mention you no longer have to pay in skin for any little mistake or mishap!
This gofundme campaign will fund the material costs and labour (at London Living wage – see below) needed to complete the polishing job and to introduce more new obstacles as and when we can afford it. There is a breakdown of our polishing estimate below.
What we have done at the Bumps so far has already had a big impact and the response from users of all ages has been overwhelmingly positive. Our free skate lessons last summer got lots of new shredders rolling and the skate Jam in July was a great community event. Now we need to take the next step, get funded and get the job done properly.

Labour Clarifications – Total transparency and fairness: Up until now all work has been voluntary, we are talking 1000s of hours. Sadly the current climate has left some members of our team in a state of serious financial uncertainty. As a charitable community organisation we would love to be able to pay a fair hourly rate to our valued workers who need it most – we want to help those out of work to earn a small income doing something awesome for the community.
