Syrian Refugee Family Sponsorship
Donation protected
My name is Michael Binder. My wife Jennifer and I are parishioners at the clustered parish of St. John de Brebeuf/St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Churches in Kingsville and Harrow Ontario.
By now everyone is aware of the current refugee crisis resulting from millions of Syrian people leaving everything and fleeing to surrounding countries. My heart aches for these people who feel the only option they have is to put their entire family's lives at risk and fleeing their homes in search of some kind of hope. I can't imagine being in their shoes.
The mass influx of refugees into European countries earlier this year prompted Pope Francis to urge all parishes and religious communities throughout Europe to take in a refugee family. Here in Canada and the U.S. bishops including our own Bishop Fabro responded by encouraging parishes to consider sponsoring a refugee family.
With this in mind the parishes of St. John de Brebeuf and St. Anthony of Padua have organized a group of volunteers who are very excited to welcome a Syrian refugee family to our community by way of sponsoring them to come to Canada and providing support to help integrate them into our society.
To be able to do so we have set a goal to raise $30,000 by Jan 31, 2016 to cover the financial costs of resettling a family in the Kingsville/Harrow area. We will be working with the Diocese of London Refugee Center and Citizenship and Immigration Canada through the Blended Visa Office-Referred Program which is designed to resettle refugees identified by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and submitted to Canadian visa offices abroad. This program is a cost-sharing arrangement whereby Citizenship and Immigration Canada and our sponsoring group will split the financial costs of resettlement 50/50.
The funds collected for the sponsorship will go toward housing, basic necessities and income support for the sponsored family for the sponsorship period of one year. These funds will also cover start-up costs such as:
· Household items
· Furniture
· Linens
· Food staples
· Clothing
· Deposits for utilities
· Phone installation
· First month’s rent
The sponsorship of a refugee family will mean a brand new start for a family that is currently homeless and who without the help of caring people willing to help, have little hope. Your donation to this cause will help ensure that we have the funds available to successfully integrate this family into our community and give them the dignity of living as members of a free and respectful society.
