COVID-19 is just getting started, and while most of us are called to sit at home and wait, heroes in our local hospitals are preparing for disaster mode. They'll work around the clock to treat critically ill patients infected with coronavirus, and may even become infected themselves.
In the meantime, after facing the impact of cancelling SXSW, local restaurants are now closing shop to protect their staff and customers. The financial losses to their businesses are huge, and have led to layoffs in some cases already.
The idea is simple:
** Raise some $$
** Use $$ to buy gift cards from local restaurants (still open for takeout/delivery), to help them get through this
** Give the gift cards to frontline health care workers (nurses, doctors, etc) who are fighting coronavirus, so they can eat and feed their families
That's it! Let's come together as a community and show some love to these folks.
Logistics are still being worked out, we'll post updates as we have them. Note that the intent here isn't to feed every health care worker and buy gift cards from every restaurant in Austin. But we want to brighten the day of people in this situation where we can - priority given to ER / ICU workers of the hospitals that will be hit the hardest. Who knows how far we can take this :)
