Refrain From The White Cane
Hello everyone,
As many now know,2013 is a year I’m very grateful to have in the rearviewmirror. While hiking in the Cambodian jungle,a bacteria infected my eyes and rendered me blind for 2 years.
On return to my base city of Perth W.A ,Australia,I was in a wheelchair and spent 6 weeks in A+ E with my eyelids stitched together.I had an official 5% chance of ever seeing again and was diagnosed with total permanent disablement.I can’t put into words the agony nor the anguish in any known or unknown language.I fasted on a silent ward one night and only for some stabilisation,my eyes were to be removed the next morning..But I took my 5% chance and fought to the bone ..
I fought and fumbled through the darkness and 2 years later broke through.I would never give up or quit on myself.
But;this fundraiser is not for me.
It’s so nobody has to go through what I have.
Some years after my mishap and many operations;a name which was unfamiliar to me appeared several times trying to make contact through my Messenger. It was only by chance I looked into this.To my surprise I seen Opthamology Cambodia on the profile;this could mean only one thing. It was the man who through kindness and selflessness bought me food, clean clothes, gave me a bed and brought me to the airport in Phnomh Penh..
It was the man who saved my life-
Peou Channy
He could not believe it was me..and I could not believe it was him.I needed to return to Cambodia.I felt an undying compulsion. He collected me and my wife at Phnom Penh airport and the feeling was indescribable. We looked at each other for the first time in the car unable really to put into words why we were in this car;why I returned to Cambodia. It was as if we knew there was something we had to do.In 2017,rather than buying each other Christmas gifts;my family, friends and I put €1000 together. My wife and I met Channy in Bangkok that December where he was studying opthamology.I passed him the envelope with the €1000 and said “use this to help people”. This would be the start of our plan.To set up an eye clinic in Prey Veng Province,Cambodia.
I am fund raising to help build a clinic with Channy,to help people that can’t afford operations. To be clear the clinic is not 100% charitable. It simply would not be sustainable.I mention this so nobody who donates would feel deluded or deceived;but we need to start somewhere.
All that we want to do is help people see again.
Please, please, please;because I and those close know what it’s like, let’s not leave people in the dark.
