Re.flex.ion : Orca | Art to end Captivity |

Can we hear the infinity of the Ocean? The sound of family? Of connection? Of bonding?

Get ready to be part of an excited Orca pod searching for food, to experience the disorientating effects of captivity and to rejoice in the infinity of the ocean! Re.Flex.ion : Orca opens up your senses to experience an acoustic world beyond our imagination!.

Follow the journey of an Orca from the security of family and community in the infinite ocean to the confines of a tank enclosure in this immersive acoustic experience. Re.Flex.ion : Orca aspires to invoke empathy and contemplation to the plight of Orcas and other sonic species kept in captivity.

Re.flex.ion brings the acoustic world of Orcas within the human range of perception and acoustically mimics the experience Orcas undergo in captivity, presented in stark contrast to the sonic freedom of communication in their natural environment.

All species on earth have their own unique way of relying on their senses to shape their reality. With humans having a very well-developed sense of vision, we often forget that not all species  “view” the world the same way we do. When thinking about captivity, we often lack awareness of these differences.

As we often are not fully aware of the depth and complexity of the senses in other species, it is difficult for us to empathize with a reality we simply cannot comprehend.

For Orcas, this reality is strongly built in acoustics

And it stretches far beyond what humans can perceive.

The aim of Re.flex.ion is to show “us” humans how deeply a concrete and glass water tank can disturb the health of sound-community-building species. By using advanced Spatial Sound Technology (4DSOUND), the installation creates full sound awareness of the immense acoustic contrast between freedom and captivity.

The project will bring a new way to portray their living conditions in captivity on a new sensory level, striving to bring a deeper understanding of the circumstances Orcas and other species have to endure in the entertainment industry.

Experience the real sound of Captivity

Re.flex.ion: Orca and Artist/Creator Alba Vega Mulet are currently part of the Residency Programme 2020 of the renowned Spatial Sound Institute in Budapest.

The residency gives us the chance to fully develop and present Re.flex.ion in collaboration with the Spatial Sound Institute’s team using 4DSOUND Spatial Sound Technologies .

Based in Amsterdam, Alba and the team are dedicated to use their extensive knowledge of acoustics and passion for nature and arts to raise awareness on the acoustic impact of human action on underwater species.

The team has been working on Re.flex.ion since 2015, a journey that brought us to the Northern tip of Norway, the wilderness of Vancouver Island and the beautiful San Juan islands to observe and be close to Orcas and develop Re.flex.ion.

Re.flex.ion : Orca is now becoming a reality, a thoughtful work made possible by the trust of many amazing beings. The supporters and endorsers list just keeps growing, and we are immensely grateful for it.

You support to Re.flex.ion will be used for the development of this project in 4DSOUND and all the possibilities that are arising, beyond its first composition. Please donate by clicking the Donate Now button on the right side of this page.

You help allows us to keep working on bring people into the acoustic realms of Nature!
