Reedy's Service- Dinosaur in the New West

My name is Jay Canode. I am a documentary film maker and visual story teller. The type of films I create emulate a style that harkens back to Charle's Kuralt's "On the Road", a CBS television series that ran for over 20 years during the 60's, 70's, and 80's. In the series Charles and crew visited interesting people and places across the USA, highlighting the people that made the world a unique and better place to live. There was no shock value. There was no drama. Just a warm sense of humanity with a universal appeal.

Reedy's Service is a family owned and operated full service filling station and garage in Paonia, Colorado. In continuous operation since the 1950's and run by 3 generations of the Reedy family, it is a virtually unchanged symbol of a bygone era in the western United States. As real estate prices in the rural West skyrocket and the traditional working class jobs evaporate, long time residents of many small western towns can no longer afford to live in the communities they grew up in. Thus a new rural culture is gradually replacing the old. Yet in the middle of it all Reedy's garage remains as it always has been, a place to come get your oil changed, your windshield washed, and have a human connection.

Reedy's represents traditional rural western values in a time when the world is experiencing great change. I have always wanted to shine a light on this community institution and explore how it fits into the contemporary West. In my film I will explore new culture vs old and will be including a bit of mid century history as well. I aim for this film to be the first in a series of projects that shines a light on people and places exposing the wisdom contained herein.

This type of work requires creative methods of funding in this age of overflowing Youtube stars and Tik Tok influencers vying for short attention spans and shock value. I ask that if meaningful, contemplative stories hold value for you that you please consider donating to this project. The money raised here will enable me to concentrate my time on producing the film, update aging video equipment, as well as compensate other artists that will be involved. Any surplus funds over the stated goal will be rolled into future projects. My goal is to submit Reedy's Service as a short documentary to film festivals before it ultimately ends up in the public sphere free to view by all.
