Red and Mona's Unexpected Challenge
Red and Mona have been active in the "Classic Car Hobby" in Sarasota for many years. Red has been a key person in organizing, assisting and even detailing classic cars for the multitudes of enthusiasts who found him to be their friend. He is an affable giant of a man, six foot four inches, always accompanied by his tiny and dedicated wife, Mona. When they dance together at the American Legion Post 159, her head reaches to his chest. What a beautiful sight to see, and what a lovely in-love couple they are. Only a few of us are fortunate enough to have a spouse who is actively interested in our old car passion and right there with us participating and supporting us.
Recently, beginning in December, things have gone very wrong for Red and Mona. Red contracted a virus related to the flu, which went directly to the valves in his heart, nearly killing him. He was incapacitated for weeks with lymphatic fluid buildup, as his heart could not keep the fluids moving in his body.
Mona faithfully nursed him back to health, like a good Army medic/nurse would. After almost a year, Red has improved but now Mona is ill. She has been diagnosed with Stage 2 colon cancer. Because of limited insurance coverage, they are experiencing financial stresses. Trying to pay for the cost of medical care has become a challenge.
This is where our car collector and very dear friends come in. We all know how it is to have something hit us from behind, blindsiding us, something we weren't expecting. Mona's diagnosis was just that.
Both Red and Mona were trained to adapt and overcome having served our Country in the United States Army. They are active in the Venice American Legion. Red is one of the founding officers of the American Legion Cruisers Car Club and is currently serving as the membership officer. Mona is secretary/treasurer. Both are also members of the Venice Region AACA, with Red having served in the past as Vice President and Mona as secretary/treasurer.
As you can see, they have contributed much for country, the classic car organizations and of course, the Cafe' Racers. Please consider donating to help our friends.
