The original marble high altar of St Mary's Shrine, Warrington was removed following the Second Vatican Council. When the Priestly Fraternity of St Peter (FSSP) arrived at the Shrine ten years ago, initially the most important activity at the Shrine - the daily celebration of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass - was celebrated on the pre-existing nave altar, which was quickly replaced by a wooden structure into which an altar stone has been inserted, placed back in the sanctuary. While this was a necessary temporary fix, with the 150th anniversary of the opening of the church fast approaching in 2027, this is an opportune time to reinstate a worthy and fitting replacement, close to the original altar plans as designed by E.W Pugin, the Shrine's architect.
Costs are estimated at £47,000 to £50,000; and we have already been given or pledged £12,500 - about a quarter of the approximate total. Are you able to help raise the remaining £38,000 and realise this important and worthy project for God's greater glory?
