Recovery Care for Michael

UPDATE: September 30, 2018

To our village,

Michael has been back home for a few weeks recovering in his home. We want to thank you for all your donations. They have helped improve his environment, mental health and rehabilitation. Michael's mother has had to endure numerous amount of unpaid work days to take him to his many, many appointments and your donations have helped offset the loss of income. The income that they rely on for necessities (food, gas, rent, bills, medication, co-payments, consultation fees, etc).

Michael still has a very long road of recovery ahead of him. Due to the complications from his surgeries, he has been told that he will not be able to play competitive soccer again and if he runs, it will be with the assistance of a brace and walking will be with the assistance of a cane.  However, we've read many stories that were similar diagnosis and we have read many stories that have proven doctors wrong. Patients that have defied the odds and returned to their life, stronger than they were before their accident. We pray and believe that will be the case for Michael. It will be a lot of hard work mentally and physically. This kind of recovery will take years. It will be a struggle, but we have faith in his focus and determination. Now that he is back home and his family has had a chance to resume some normalcy to their lives, they have worked with their church to put together a gofundme for their community. We will no longer accept payments through this page as of today but if you would like to donate, we encourage you to please visit their family page at https://www.gofundme.com/recovery-care-for-michael-tinoco .

We are so thankful for the outpour of concern, prayers, donations and support from not only our friends and family but friends of our friends and family that we don't even know. You all have been a blessing to us and have been apart of our healing journey. You kind words, text messages, visits and concern helped carry our spirits through the difficult times.

God bless you and know that you have been apart of an extraordinary group of people that helped fly Michael back to his family though the air ambulance and provide so much relief to a family that has been in need.

Sincerely,

Santillan, Toney & Tinoco families

Michael is a student at St. John Bosco. He plays soccer for the club FC Premier and also was well on his way to making the Varsity  soccer team, as a sophomore, at Bosco before this tragedy struck. Michael loves soccer and we are determined to get him back on the field sooner than later.

Over this summer Michael was involved in a horrible accident on the lake (details below). The accident was severe, crushing his leg, pelvis and shin. Doctors were unsure if Michael would walk again. Michael was determined and strong and after four surgeries and many prayers, his diagnosis improved.  It will take time, but he will walk again. Praise God!

After four weeks of recovering in the trauma unit in Nevada, Michael was well enough to travel via air ambulance to California. Unfortunately, insurance would not cover the helicopter. And that meant, he would be forced to continue his recovery in Las Vegas, far away from family and friends.

However, in the first four weeks of this campaign, enough money was donated that we were able to withdraw the full funds ($5,952) and give to Michael’s family to use towards bringing Michael home.  The donations went towards the air ambulance, the ambulance from the lake to the ER, the three hour ambulance ride from the  ER to the Children’s Hospital in Las Vegas and hospital fees.  Because of the kindness of others, Michael is now recovering closer to family and friends. Your donations truly make a difference.

Our family and Michael’s family are working together to cover what we can, but some of the cost are more than our families can afford at this moment.  You would be surprised at what insurance does and does not cover. The hard road to recovery includes physical therapy, occupational therapy, psychologist, home modifications including ramps, in-home hospital bed, his own wheelchair, etc.

The rehab facilities that insurance does cover, are not the right fit for Michael. Basically, we want the best for Michael, with our without insurance. The best care will make all the difference in his recovery. Our goal is not only see Michael walk and run but with the right tools, he will play soccer again. We all believe this to be true. The goal is for Michael to be stronger than we was before this accident.

If you can donate, please do. Any amount is appreciated. No amount is too small. We will continue to share with you how your donations are being spent.

You might be asking why are we leading the gofundme campaign and not Michael’s family? Well first of all, they have so much on their plates right now and as important as this is, their priority is caring for Michael.  We felt so helpless after the accident and asked their permission to run this campaign. We are so grateful that they are allowing us to help in this small way.

We strongly believe in the power of prayer and we continue to ask you to pray for Michael's recovery.  We welcome prayers, well wishes, donations and all things positive.

Again, we thank those of you that have already donated. You truly helped change the path of his recovery and helped change a life. Being back to family and friends, is so good for the soul!

So nice to be back hanging out with friends and having some normalcy back into his day!

*****************************
As you know, I was involved in a horrific accident on the lake. While riding a Sea Doo, I accidentally collided into a tow-able tube that my grandson, Nicolas,  and his best friend were on. My grandson's best friend, took the brunt of the impact and was severely injured.

He will need multiple surgeries, physical therapy, a psychologist, trauma specialist, medical care, hospital care , wheelchair, home modifications, in home nurse, tutor, prescriptions filled, and an in-home orthopedic bed, etc. His family will also have to travel back and forth to Las Vegas from California during his expected one to two month hospital stay to be with him.  This will cause a loss of income for both parents. These are just a few of the adjustments to his life.

As much as I wish that I could, I can not go back and change what happened. Going forward, I want to do what I can to ease some of the burden on his family that has been presented through this accident.

Many of you have reached out asking how you can help me financially. Firstly, I ask you to continue to lift Michael and his family up in prayer. Please pray for a quick, painless, speedy recovery. Please pray that this time next year or sooner, this young man is walking and running and stronger mentally, physically and spiritually than before this tragic time.

If you would like to donate, any amount is appreciated. We will update everyone on how these donations are spent.

His family asks that any families that know Michael, please keep this gofundme as an adult matter. They are trying to keep Michael in a "bubble" of positivity.  He is not aware of the extent of his injuries or the care he will need after and they don't want him to hear anything third party or through social media. Thank you for your understanding of this very important request.

If you would like to donate directly, please contact me.

Sincerely,

Joe Santillan
