Great News!
Doug Meijer who, in concert with the Meijer Foundation, solely funded our program for the last 3 years has pledged matching funds up to $75,000.00.   This means that for every dollar you donate, we receive two.  Your donations will give us a year to pursue and implement plans and actions to provide a stable future for RA and for current and future students.

Currently, we have enough funds to go through another month.  We are all celebrating not having to close our doors the end of the year!  Now we need to keep up the momentum of obtaining donations.  Thank you, Friends and Family, for your generous support!  We have a great beginning.

A couple weeks ago we had a tough meeting.

Staff and students met to discuss the potential of Recovery Academy closing.  There was a lot of emotion-disbelief, anger and grief.  This is normal given the potential of such a great loss. However, the anger and pain were quickly replaced with problem-solving, excitement and determination to keep our doors open.  One student agreed to start up social media sites on Twitter, Snapchat and Instagram.  Others agreed to make videos of students to share how their lives have been transformed as a result of their participation with RA.  (I will post videos as they are completed).  Some students know “someone” that may be helpful to support our survival.  It was so wonderful to see people that may only have started classes in the last month, yet they were all excited to be part of a process to save what has become so valuable to them.  The leadership skills we teach were alive and present during our meeting.  It was extremely gratifying to witness.

All of our students are in a bad space when they come to us.  Most students report feeling totally terrified, lost and disempowered when they first walk through our doors.  Those feelings quickly dissipate when students experience the culture of hope, warmth and acceptance that has been nurtured here.  Everyone is following through with their offers to help.  They can’t wait to come in and share what they have done.  Talk about empowerment!  We are now implementing many of the ideas that were generated at our meeting.  Local agencies and churches arealso very interested in our survival.

Please continue to support us by donating whatever you can.  If you have already donated, or not, please forward this request to everyone on your contact list.  It’s a great gift to do so.  We have a long way to go, but I am sure that, with your help, Recovery Academy will survive and thrive. Thank you again!

Warmly,

Kathy Roaleen MA, LLP
