Recovery Fund to help Andres
On June 16th 2018, I was dragged and ran over by a pickup truck in downtown, Cincinnati. The driver fled the scene immediately.
I was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries and given a 15% chance of survival when I first arrived at UC hospital. I was in a coma for several hours. Unfortunately, I had no health insurance at this time. Both of my lungs collapsed, I had 5th degree lacerations to my liver, fractures in my right scapula, right distal clavicle, ribs 2-10 right side, T3-6 spinous processes, T4 transverse process, S1 fracture, right inferior pubic ramus fracture, right ankle (medial malleolar) fracture, right ulnar styloid fracture, right medial epicondyle fracture.
I underwent several high-risk surgeries to address internal bleeding and damage to lungs, rib replacement surgery (7 metal ribs), and ankle surgery (metal screw in place). My chances of survival increased slowly and within a week I was at 50% and eventually, 100% survival rate but the doctors had no guarantees on how the fractures would heal.
My doctors, nurses, therapists, family, and friends took great care of me throughout the entire healing process. I spent a month in ICU at UC Hospital and another month in the Drake Center during the first part of recovery. After two long months, I was finally discharged and sent home in a wheelchair. I was given PT sessions at home for a few weeks & later graduated to onsite PT sessions at UC's Drake office.
I worked harder every day to overcome pain and the physical and mental challenges that come from being badly hurt, I credit my faith in God and love for my family & community for this successful recovery.
After leaving the hospitals, it was still uncertain whether my fractures would fully heal, I was told to complete therapy first and then assess the progress to determine whether I would end up with a disability or not.
The transition from the medical facilities back to my home was very difficult, I was in a wheelchair for two months under a lot of pain and had to lay down on my side most of the day while trying to do most daily activities using my left arm only.
Before I was ran over in June, I had been living/renting an old tiny house in the hills of Clifton and working as an independent contractor doing small construction jobs, booking music concerts, DJ'ing on the weekends and driving Uber on my free time.
The house I was renting was very old and had narrow door frames, too narrow for the wheelchair to fit. The entrance to this house had a steep staircase which made it impossible for wheelchair access. The house had mold and was dangerous because I still had open wounds that needed daily wound care. Because of those three issues -my case worker and doctors urged me to move out to a safer home upon getting discharged from the Drake Center. I was advised to find a disability apartment, wheelchair accessible and near the UC hospital -because it was close to my medical appointments and physical therapy. I had little time to find a new home and limited resources to do it.
A close friend helped me find a place ideal for my situation and a few days later my family helped me sign a lease on a one bedroom apartment in Walnut Hills. I have been living/recovering here since August 2018. The rent here is a bit pricey (around $1,000 monthly) because of the type of apartment it is, and because it's in a newer building. Family members took turns assisting me at home until I was walking again and independent.
With the help of family & friends, a funding campaign was created in July and $7K out of the $10K goal was raised to help pay for my expenses during recovery. Today medical bills exceed $450,000, not including the bill for the Drake Center. Fortunately, I applied for Medicaid during the first weeks of being hospitalized and got approved shortly after. The insurance covers all the medical procedures done at UC hospital, in return they automatically get a percentage of the lawsuit money I receive from this case once it's settled to pay them back.
There is a lawsuit in place against the driver and his insurance. My lawyer is confident that I will receive proper compensation for the injuries and trauma sustained, however, the legal process can take up to another year and consequently I won't receive any money for a while.
I've been working as much as my body allows, I work part-time 2-3 days a week DJ'ing. The income I make from this is not enough to pay for rent, however, I am able to pay for all my other expenses such as child support, food, monthly bills (water, electric & internet), transportation, gym and some medicine not covered by my insurance.
The funds previously raised ran out months ago and since then I have been paying for rent through loans from my lawyer and paying the rest of expenses with the income from DJing. I've reached the limit of loans through my lawyer so now I need to raise money to help pay the rent for the remainder of my apartment's lease (5 months left).
After the lease is up in August, I plan on moving to a more economic home without the special disability set up. I am hopeful that my health will continue to improve and within a year I will be able to work full time again. Today I applied for disability but it takes three months to get approved so it is not an immediate solution.
Currently, I am late on rent for the month of March and am facing eviction in the next few days. My family is unable to help me at this time due to several medical and financial limitations, which is why you are reading this.
I sincerely need your help. Please donate any amount you can and share this campaign with others in your network. I plan on using the funds to pay out the lease on this apartment, in order to continue attending physical therapy and finish out this recovery plan.
Thank you for reading this and for helping in any way you can, this entire experience has been very difficult and humbling. I plan on recovering 100% and to help others overcome similar trauma.
Blessings,
Andres
