On Wednesday March 18th, around 10am, Oliver had an attack of severe chest pains that would not pass. After about a minute of the attack, I decided we could not wait any longer, we had to go to the ER. Thankfully the closest hospital was only 9 minutes away. He was shortly diagnosed with spontaneous pneumothorax, also known as a lung collapse. His condition and pain was stable at first, but got worse throughout the night. His lung collapse had spread rapidly, and an emergency chest tube was put in to expel the air trapped in his chest cavity and around his heart. There were many hours where we didn’t know if it would get better.
Thankfully, after four days in the hospital, three with the chest tube, his condition stabilized and healing could begin. They were able to remove the tube and send him home. In this time, he was not diagnosed with COVID-19, thankfully. However, a respiratory sickness like COVID could easily cause a relapse of his condition. Beyond the worry and stress of having a nearly fatal accident, there was the other worry of money.
Oliver is currently uninsured, and has racked up thousands (if not more) in medical bills. The exact numbers will come to us in 60 days. In this time we will be working tirelessly to try and get him insured, as well as find programs that help uninsured and low income individuals deal with catastrophic medical debt. Regardless of the hospital bills, Oliver and I have both been laid off due to COVID-19, and currently have no income, nor any idea as when we will return to work, like so many Americans. I feel like it is important to note that when the attack first started happening, Oliver was very hesitant to run directly to the ER, because of him being uninsured. It may sound insane, but the worry of being hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt is very real. It can be something a person never recovers from financially. So many Americans have to worry about this, and weigh out the consequences of their health vs their livelihood, but that’s a discussion for another time.
I’m asking you on behalf of Oliver to contribute anything you can to help provide him with medication, wound care, sterile supplies and hospital bills. Any donation, even in the smallest, would be a huge help to his well being. If you are also one of those people who are unemployed right now and have no idea where your next dollar will come from, this isn’t directed at you. A simple share would be just a good as a donation. If you are someone who is still working, still has income, please consider making a donation.
As more info comes to us we will update this page. Please feel free to share!
From the bottom of my heart (and Oliver’s lung) we thank you. :)
Love,
Kelly
