Recovery for Rob

On May 1st of 2018, Rob (23 years old), was in a serious dirt biking accident. He was immediately transported to Victoria General Hospital, then again to Royal Jubilee Hospital to undergo a Cardiovascular surgery. In the accident he had torn his aorta (major vessel in the heart), compressed lungs and many fractures in the ribcage. Which all had to be tended to immediately.  At 2:30 am, May 2nd, we were flown to Vancouver General Hospital to see a very experienced SCI (Spinal Cord Injury) surgeon. Rob fractured his T2 - T9 (spinal discs) on the left side and his T8 (spinal disc) on the right. As well as having a incomplete blow to his Spinal Column at the T6-T7 level. On the ASIA scale for acute spine patients, he was graded at a Level B. He was in surgery for 7 and 1/2 hours. He has a 35% chance of recovery to be able to walk assisted or unassisted. He was admitted to GF Strong on June 8th, with an expected stay of 10 weeks. Since the dirt bike accident was on a public road, we are unable to make a claim to help cover costs of equipment, home care and whatever else Rob needs in the future. We were under the impression that the equipment can range from $9k to $22k for just a wheelchair that is best suited for his body shape and size. We haven't been given an estimated discharge date from GF Strong to return home to Vancouver Island. With the money we raise it will continuously be used to help support Rob with future physio and occupational therapy sessions. The sooner we have as much for funding, the better chance Rob will have a very successful recovery process in a facility and at home. The family, close friends and myself thank you in advance for anything you can do to help us in this difficult situation. We all would like to see Rob have the best outcome for his future life and career path.
