Imagine you are working in Maryland, 1,300 miles from your home. You are on your way to work riding the motorcycle you purchased last night. You hit some uneven pavement, lose your balance, and get thrown off the bike. Then you get ran over by a truck. You break an arm and leg and you're missing at least 70% of your calf. But miraculously you are still alive! A stranger pulls over and you toss her your phone to call 911..... Except she steals your phone and drives away. She declines every worried call from your family who were alerted of the crash from Life360. Then she drains your bank account (at least $4,000), starts taking out loans and opening credit cards in your name.
Meanwhile you are in the hospital fighting for your life. Over the next week you will be in and out of the OR. They put pins in your arm so the bone will heal straight. They take muscle from your thigh and graft it to your shin to avoid amputation. They have to remove part of your tibia and replace it with a metal rod. In 6 weeks you'll be in the OR again to receive a bone graft. Every day you are in between pain and excruciating pain.
Your family was able to contact the Baltimore PD and they find out you're in the hospital. They get in contact with hospital staff and find out the extent of your injuries.... but your family is back in Oklahoma. You are pretty much as far away from home as possible without leaving the continental US. Your family can't just drive to the hospital to be with you. They all have jobs, bills, kids, etc that cant be left behind on a whim. Your best friend uses his last $500 to fly out to the hospital and stay with you so you at least have someone. But this is putting his job and car on the line. Not to mention that this is a continuation of the unfortunate events your family has been dealt the past couple months.
Six months ago you and your friend were in a racing accident where you broke several ribs and vertebrae from your neck to your lumbar. Then in March your grandparents were run off the road by a car while riding their motorcycle. They would also end up with several broken bones each. They would end up staying in the hospital for weeks. The driver was never found. Then 3 weeks ago your sister, cousin, and niece were involved in a bad wreck. The car was totaled after being rear ended by an uninsured driver.
If I saw this in a movie I would say it sounded ridiculous. But this is sadly the true story of my brother, Aydn Hubert. He has been in the University of Maryland medical center's trauma wing for a week now. In and out of surgery. Always in pain. No phone. No money. Nothing. Just 1 familiar face and a couple phone calls to family to bring any sort of comfort. The next (who knows how many) months will bring ever increasing levels of stress. More surgery. More recovery. Fighting legal battles against the stranger who robbed him and left him to bleed out on the pavement. Finding out if he can continue his career as a solar panel installer & electrician. Etc. His medical team suggested we start a GoFundMe..... so this is it. Please don't feel obligated to make a donation. If anything just please keep Aydn in your thoughts and prayers during the next couple months. He is going to need all the positive energy he can get. Thank you.
