On July 9, 2021 at 10:35 pm Kamden Warren a 16-year-old boy was in a horrific accident in his truck. Kamden was thrown from the vehicle and sustained a badly broken hip, broken arm/shoulder, broken rib, along with contusions to his heart and lungs the worst injury was a brain injury. Kamden was ambulanced to a local hospital where he was immediately transferred into a helicopter and airlifted to Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford Oregon where doctors placed a drain in his head to relieve pressure off his brain. His injuries were too extensive for that hospital so Kamden was placed in a plane and transferred from an airport to OHSU hospital in Portland Oregon. Kamden was in a coma, in ICU on a ventilator, traction on his right leg. On July 12, 2021 the team of neurosurgeons told his family that Kamden has a serious traumatic brain injury that is called Diffuse Axonal Injury or DAI, and that he would likely never recover; if by chance he did recover he would have major deficits. He was in a coma for 15 days eventually after waking up, he was transferred to the trauma floor for recovery. He had several surgeries including placement of a feeding tube, along with plates and screws in his hip, and plates and screws in his arm/shoulder. On September 22 2021 he was transferred to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland California where he did extensive rehabilitation therapy 3 hours (or more) a day, 6 days a week . A few days before Halloween he returned home. His mother Sarah has remained with him throughout the whole process. Sarah was a full time charge nurse, currently she takes care of Kamden 24 hours a day. Now that he’s home Kamden requires therapy outside of the home up to six times a week. Kamden is making a miraculous recovery he is starting to eat food by mouth, he can talk, and and he can reason. He wakes up and says, “where are we gonna go?” It’s heartbreaking to hear him tell people he’s going to his friend’s house or a family member’s house. There is no way to transport. He cannot go anywhere (outside of therapy) due to him being wheelchair bound. He cannot ride in car yet. His mother desperately needs a way to get him to and from appointments as well as places outside of their home for his mental health. Currently the only form of public transportation has not been reliable for Kamden. Today he had to miss his physical therapy appointment he desperately needs because the driver was 45 minutes late picking them up. It’s not the first time, after therapy they were standing outside in the cold for 35 minutes waiting on transportation (scheduled transportation). When they had to go to the ER they were at the Mercy of non-emergent transport and were at the hospital for an addition 6 hours. Sarah had not slept in 27 hours that night, Kamden went without his tube feeds and some of his medications, it could have been prevented if only she had a van. The most heartbreaking of all is knowing this child has a family tradition his entire life of driving around this time of year to look at Christmas lights. This year the family will be going without him if she can’t find him transportation. I know I am asking for a lot, there are fees with every donation that is taken out automatically. My goal is to find a way to get Kamden a wheelchair accessible van that is reliable. This kid is fighting hard to get his life back with brain healing comes awareness and his emotions are intact. He’s fighting depression this kid’s coping mechanism prior to his accident was to go for a drive in the woods. Having the ability to get Kamden to new places will help stimulate his brain and aid in his recovery. Sarah has been through so much too I want to take some of the stress off her shoulders. Every penny helps. Thank you and god bless.
