Days before Christmas, I received a major shock: I needed emergency spinal surgery. Thankfully it went very well, but I am still hospitalized and focused on my long recovery. Soon, I expect to be transferred to a skilled nursing facility, where I will spend at least eight weeks for treatment and physical therapy. I am thankful and relieved to receive the care I need; I will eventually be OK. However, I face a challenge: As a freelance journalist who has already had to delay two major feature stories for the San Francisco Chronicle, I will have no income during this time. In fact, this crisis is depleting all my funds. It isn’t easy for me to ask for your help, but I am at that point where I admit that I need your assistance to get back on my feet when I am released, returning to the work I love: shedding light on stories that impact people’s lives and sharing insights that bring people joy.
