I have been trying to save up for this surgery, diagnosis and finding a referral for a collegiate vet program for almost 2 years since she jumped out of a 10' cab-over work truck and severely damaging her knee.
At first I thought it was only the visible injury, she ripped off two of her nails to the wick, that was causing her limping. But after seeing a vet some months after her nail recovered with her limp remaining, it was found that her knee's ligaments were severely damaged and would require major reconstructive surgery.
I have been getting back on my feet after falling on tough times and cannot pay, without going further into debt, for this medical procedure in full.
After her vet visit yesterday, January 19th 2018, I have gotten a referral from that vet for UGA's veterinary program and a date set for surgery on February 27th 2018.
You may have heard of less expensive ACL surgeries however because of Raven’s size, weight and energy level she requires TPLO surgery and normally costs $6,000 - $8,000 excluding medicine prescriptions and overnight care.
The TPLO technique was developed somewhat recently as a stronger repair because, quite simply, if dogs can tear the ligament they were born with, then there is a risk of tearing the new one we put in.
The TPLO is performed with steel plates that are stronger than a false ligament. However, steel plates are very expensive and take more time to implant, thus part of the reason for the huge difference in price
Following this procedure Raven will be in post surgical care for 1-3 days with medical fees more than likely adding up over the reduced rate stated by UGA.
Getting Raven into UGA's vet program isn't an easy task and we're lucky to have this opportunity at such a good facility. This program is hard to get into so I appreciate any donations, shares or any other means to meet my goal.
Thanks to those involved and I'll be more than thrilled to see my baby girl get all four legs steadfast on the ground again.
