Waan Aelon in Majel (WAM) is an NGO in the Marshall Islands dedicated to traditional canoe building and sailing. At a same time it is a school for dropout students and a training center for sustainable boat building. WAM is fighting at the forefront of climate change and is a shining example how a small NGO can improve the livelyhood of an entire country by street-work, tradition, science, education and training.
Last night, WAM's office building and the brand new workshop for low emission craft burned down. Fortunately, nobody was harmed but the workshop, most of the tools including the logging equipment, the entire office with all documents, old artifacts and and the WAM truck were destroyed.
This is a heavy loss for the Marshall Islands and the hole world. In the past 30 years WAM has not only trained hundreds of young people in traditional arts and life-skills, WAM also documented canoe sailing, built countless outrigger canoes and is a key institution for the transitioning to low carbon shipping by combining indigenous knowledge and modern science. We had just rebuilt and renovated large parts of the WAM campus to host more workshops for canoe building.
It is impossible to bring back the things that were lost to the flames but we can help to keep the program running. Please support WAM
to finance the most crucial reconstruction! If every one gives a few bucks we can rebuilt WAM together.
About me and the fundraiser: This fundraiser is officially approved by WAM. I'm a German engineer working for WAM since 2018. Sometimes on the Marshall Islands, sometimes from abroad. Right now I'm in Germany, that's why the fundraiser is in Euro.
It's difficult to donate money to NGOs in the RMI. If you are familiar with sending money to the RMI it would be better to donate directly to wam instead of using the GoFundMe fundraiser. The fundraiser is mainly for all the wam friends around the world who don't know how to send money.
