Urgent Assistance for Rural Families Affected by the Earthquake in Colombia

Hola. Me llamo Jaime de la Fuente, soy español, pero llevo más de dos años viviendo permanentemente en Colombia. Formo parte de una red local de apoyo que presta ayuda en situaciones de seguridad, atención médica y emergencias.

Hello. My name is Jaime de la Fuente. I am Spanish, but I have been living permanently in Colombia for more than two years. I am part of a local support network that assists people with security, medical assistance and emergency situations.

Desde el terremoto del 10 de agosto de 2026, un grupo de personas estamos trabajando directamente con familias afectadas que viven en algunas de las zonas rurales más alejadas.

Since the earthquake that struck Colombia on August 10, 2026, a group of us have been working directly with affected families living in some of the most remote rural areas.

El Proyecto Techos de Amor comenzó en Dagua, Valle del Cauca. Nuestra intención es ampliar progresivamente la ayuda a otras zonas afectadas a medida que consigamos recursos.

The Techos de Amor Project began in Dagua, Valle del Cauca. Our intention is to progressively extend the assistance to other affected areas as resources become available.

Cientos de familias se han quedado sin casa / Hundreds of families have lost their homes

En las zonas rurales, cientos de familias han perdido sus viviendas o ya no pueden habitarlas.

In rural areas, hundreds of families have lost their homes or can no longer live in them.

Muchas están durmiendo sobre colchonetas, bajo tiendas improvisadas con plásticos y otros materiales.

Many are sleeping on mattresses under improvised shelters made from plastic sheets and other materials.

Y está lloviendo / And it is raining.

El problema no es únicamente la cantidad de ayuda disponible. También es conseguir que esa ayuda llegue a quienes viven en las zonas más aisladas.

The problem is not simply how much aid is available. It is also getting that aid to the people living in the most isolated areas.

La geografía de Colombia hace que muchas comunidades rurales sean difíciles de alcanzar. Los caminos son complicados, las distancias grandes y muchas veredas —comunidades rurales— están alejadas de los principales núcleos urbanos.

Colombia's geography makes many rural communities difficult to reach. The roads are challenging, distances are long, and many veredas — rural communities and settlements — are far from the main population centres.

La ayuda particular existe. Hemos visto vehículos desplazándose por caminos rurales para repartir alimentos y otros suministros. Pero, en la práctica, gran parte de esa ayuda termina concentrándose en las zonas más accesibles, mientras algunas familias que viven más lejos siguen sin una solución básica para protegerse de la lluvia y pasar la noche.

Private relief efforts do exist. We have seen vehicles travelling along rural roads distributing food and other supplies. But in practice, much of this assistance ends up concentrated in the more accessible areas, while some families living farther away still have no basic solution to protect themselves from the rain and get through the night.

La respuesta institucional está en marcha, pero la reconstrucción y la asignación de recursos requieren tiempo.

The institutional response is underway, but reconstruction and the allocation of public resources take time.

Estas familias no pueden esperar meses para volver a tener un techo.

These families cannot wait months to have a roof over their heads again.

Nosotros hemos decidido empezar / We decided to start

Con nuestros propios recursos hemos reunido los materiales necesarios para construir los dos primeros módulos habitacionales iniciales.

We have already begun using our own resources and have acquired the materials needed to build the first two Initial Residential Modules.

Son unidades de aproximadamente 16 m², concebidas como una solución habitacional inmediata: un espacio seco, seguro y funcional donde una familia pueda dormir, preparar comida y protegerse de la lluvia.

They are approximately 16 m² and were developed as an immediate housing solution: a dry, safe and functional space where a family can sleep, prepare food and remain protected from the weather.

La primera unidad ya está montada y nos ha permitido comprobar algo importante: es una construcción robusta y mucho más amplia y funcional por dentro de lo que su superficie puede hacer pensar sobre un plano.

The first unit has already been assembled, and it has allowed us to confirm something important: it is a robust structure and feels much more spacious and functional inside than its floor area might suggest on a drawing.

Por eso ya no la consideramos simplemente un refugio provisional. El módulo habitacional inicial está concebido para permanecer y convertirse en el núcleo de una vivienda mayor, que pueda ampliarse progresivamente conforme evolucionen las necesidades y posibilidades de la familia.

For this reason, we no longer consider it simply a temporary shelter. The Initial Residential Module is designed to remain in place and become the core of a larger dwelling, which can be progressively expanded as the family's needs and resources evolve.

En el primer lugar al que hemos llegado hay aproximadamente 18 viviendas gravemente afectadas de 20 que hemos visitado, y con nuestros recursos actuales solo podemos construir dos módulos.

At the first location we reached, approximately 18 of the 20 homes we visited were severely affected, and with the resources currently available we can only build two modules.

Y en las zonas colindantes a la primera, sumamos más de 150 viviendas gravemente afectadas o derruidas por el terremoto.

In the surrounding areas, we have identified more than 150 homes that are severely damaged or have been destroyed by the earthquake.

Por eso necesitamos ayuda. / That is why we need help.

Una solución que podemos construir ahora / A housing solution we can build now

Hemos desarrollado un sistema constructivo modular que permite fabricar y montar las unidades rápidamente y adaptarlas a las necesidades de cada familia.

We have developed a modular construction system that allows the units to be manufactured and installed relatively quickly and adapted to the needs of each family.

Es la solución más inmediata: un espacio protegido y funcional para dormir, preparar alimentos y vivir protegido de la lluvia y de las condiciones ambientales.

Las soluciones están concebidas de forma modular, de manera que puedan ampliarse posteriormente cuando las circunstancias y los recursos lo permitan, siempre respetando los requisitos técnicos y de seguridad aplicables.

The solutions are designed as modular systems so that compatible extensions can be added later as circumstances and resources allow, while maintaining the applicable technical and safety requirements.

Hemos establecido un objetivo inicial de 10.000 €.

We have set an initial fundraising target of €10,000.

No es el coste total de la reconstrucción. Es el primer tramo que necesitamos para continuar las primeras actuaciones y comenzar a llevar esta solución directamente a más familias afectadas.

This is not the total cost of reconstruction. It is the first amount we need to continue the initial operations and begin delivering this housing solution directly to more affected families.

A medida que consigamos fondos, iremos ampliando el número de viviendas que podemos construir.

As funding becomes available, we will progressively increase the number of homes we can build.

La campaña permanecerá abierta mientras continúe la emergencia y existan familias rurales que necesiten ayuda.

The campaign will remain open while the emergency continues and rural families still need assistance.

Publicaremos actualizaciones periódicas mostrando cuánto dinero hemos recibido, en qué se ha utilizado, cuántos módulos y viviendas hemos construido, dónde se han construido y cuántas familias han podido recuperar un lugar seguro donde vivir.

We will publish regular updates showing how much money we have received, how it has been used, how many residential modules and homes we have built, where they have been built, and how many families have been able to regain a safe place to live.

Nuestro objetivo no es simplemente llevar ayuda a una zona afectada.

Our goal is not simply to take aid to an affected area.

Queremos construir soluciones habitacionales allí donde las familias han perdido su casa, empezando por las comunidades rurales de Dagua.

We want to build housing where families have lost their homes, starting with the rural communities of Dagua.

Cada aportación se convierte en materiales, transporte y trabajo para acercar una solución habitacional a una familia que hoy está durmiendo sin un techo adecuado.

Every contribution becomes materials, transportation and labour that help bring a safe place to live closer to a family that is currently without adequate housing.

Si conseguimos suficientes fondos, ampliaremos progresivamente el proyecto a otras comunidades rurales afectadas por el terremoto.

If we receive enough funding, we will progressively expand the project to other rural communities affected by the earthquake.

La emergencia no terminará en unas semanas. La reconstrucción llevará meses. Nosotros ya estamos allí y ya sabemos cómo empezar a construir. Lo que necesitamos son los recursos para seguir haciéndolo.

The emergency will not end in a few weeks. Reconstruction will take months. We are already there, and we already know how to start building. What we need are the resources to keep doing it.

Mientras ponemos en marcha la construcción de los módulos habitacionales, estamos proporcionando ayuda básica directamente a las familias afectadas.

While we begin the housing construction programme, we are providing basic assistance directly to affected families.

Estamos repartiendo mercados con alimentos no perecederos, leche, huevos y productos de higiene y limpieza, como cepillos y pasta dental, jabón personal, jabón para lavar ropa y productos para lavar la loza.

We are distributing food packages containing non-perishable food, milk, eggs and basic hygiene and cleaning products, including toothbrushes and toothpaste, personal soap, laundry soap and dishwashing products.

Cada mercado tiene un coste aproximado de 50.000 pesos colombianos (unos 14 € / 16 USD).

Each food package costs approximately COP 50,000 (around €14 / USD 16).

También estamos censando a las personas afectadas por sexo y edad para poder distribuir de forma organizada la ropa que habíamos acopiado previamente.

We are also registering affected people by age and gender so that we can distribute the clothing we had previously collected in an organized way.

De esta manera podemos hacer llegar las prendas a quienes realmente las necesitan, en lugar de repartirlas indiscriminadamente.

This allows us to match the available clothing to the people who actually need it rather than distributing it indiscriminately.
