On January 6, 2026, at 3:30 a.m., my elderly grandparents and 4 other seniors were awakened by chaos, smoke, and flashing lights. A devastating 5-alarm fire in Ridgewood, Queens, forced them out of their home with no warning. They had no time to gather medications, clothing, identification, or family photos. They fled with nothing but the clothes they were wearing.
Although their building was not fully engulfed in flames, firefighters were forced to break through shared walls and the roof to stop the fire from spreading. Water poured into the apartment, destroying everything inside. The building was later declared unsafe and uninhabitable by DOB, and all residents were evacuated.
For my grandparents and other elderly residents of the building, this loss is not just about an apartment. It is the loss of safety, routine, and dignity. Many of these seniors have lived quietly, responsibly, and independently for decades. Now, in a single night, they are sleeping in uncertainty, unsure where they will lay their heads next.
Most of these seniors survive on minimal Social Security income. They cannot afford hotels, upfront rental deposits, or even the cost of replacing essentials without help. Every passing day without stable housing increases fear, stress, and serious health risks.
WHY WE URGENTLY NEED $16,000
Right now, the most critical need is safe, stable housing.
Landlords require the first month’s rent and a security deposit upfront before keys are issued. To keep the seniors safe and together, we are trying to place them in temporary housing for 1 year.
Here is the immediate breakdown:
• Security deposit: $2,000 per household
• First month’s rent: $2,000 per household
• Total upfront per household: $4,000
• 4 households × $4,000 = $16,000 needed immediately
This amount is the difference between elderly grandparents having a door they can lock at night, or not knowing where they will sleep tomorrow.
THE ONGOING REALITY
• Monthly rent per household: $2,000
• Annual rent per household: $24,000
While we continue searching for long-term assistance and rebuilding options, this upfront funding is the barrier standing between these seniors and safety.
Without it, they face prolonged displacement, instability, and the emotional toll of starting over at an age when no one should have to.
Our family is doing everything we can, but we cannot do this alone. Time is critical. These elderly grandparents deserve a warm, safe place to live during the rebuilding period, not fear and uncertainty.
If you are able to donate, please know your kindness is changing lives immediately. If you cannot donate, sharing this page helps us reach someone who can.
Thank you for your generosity in supporting our elderly grandparents when they need it most. We will update you on how your funds will be used.
