My name is Pheng Thamdy, and I am a farmer in Waialua, Hawai’i. I am one of many farmers severely affected by the recent March 2026 Kona Low storms. As the island prepares once again for a week of heavy rains, high winds, & flooding, I am humbly asking for your support as I navigate through this time.
I have been a farmer for 25+ years, providing vegetables for this island I now call my home. This is my livelihood and my life’s work. I work hard to grow many crops on my land such as cherry tomatoes, long beans, pumpkin, sequa (loofah squash), opo squash, lemongrass, papaya, banana, green onion, Chinese parsley, mint, Choi sum, and bok choy. However, when the storms hit, I lost everything. Years of cultivation all gone within hours. Nothing left to harvest, not even scraps to sell. The heavy flooding left the land in such a state that I don’t know when I’ll be able to plant next.
The floods not only took all my crops but my work van as well. My van was my mode of transportation for work, and I relied on it to sell my vegetables. My container home was also flooded; my belongings were lost or totally damaged. The funds I raise will go towards immediate expenses and needs to help me get back on my feet.
I love to farm; it is the only life I know. Even when I broke my back, that didn’t stop me. I love to provide for my community and will continue to do so until I am no longer physically able to. Thank you for reading & considering my story. I am deeply grateful & appreciative for any support my community can offer. Any contribution, even just sharing my story, will make a world of a difference.
Thank you.
