On December 27, 2025, our lives were turned upside down. What was supposed to be a joyful skiing holiday in the Allgäu mountains of Germany ended as tragedy that has changed our mam’s life forever.
The Accident and Injuries:
While skiing, our mam suffered a catastrophic spinal injury. She was rushed to emergency surgery that same day, and she has remained in Murnau Hospital in Germany ever since. The road to recovery is long, and the extent of her injuries is severe:
- Spinal Cord Injury (Th4/5): Resulting in paraplegia.
- Severe Translational Injury: Affecting Th3 through Th6.
- Multiple Fractures: Including the C7 and Th11 vertebrae, ribs, and sternum.
- Thoracic Trauma: Significant lung complications (haemopneumothorax).
Currently, she is fighting to become stable enough for the long medical flight back to Ireland.
A Family Separated
Mam is the heart of our home. She has three sons—aged 12, 13, and 17—who miss her desperately. Since the accident, our dad has been caring for us on his own. With no extended family in Ireland to lean on, the physical and emotional toll has been immense.
Because of the mounting costs, we have only been able to see her once since December. Being separated by thousands of miles during the most difficult time of our lives is a heartbreak we never expected.
The Road Ahead: Why We Need Your Help
When Mam finally returns to Ireland, her life will look very different. Our family home requires major structural adaptations to ensure she can live safely and with the dignity she deserves.
We are raising funds to cover:
- Safe Medical Transfer: The flight required to bring her from Germany to Ireland with medical assistance on board.
- Home Adaptations: Essential renovations to make our house wheelchair accessible.
- Specialist Equipment: Wheelchair and advanced mobility aids and medical tech for daily life.
- Continued Rehabilitation: Intensive therapy in both Germany and Ireland to maximize her independence.
- Family Travel: Helping us afford the costs to visit her during her remaining time in German rehab.
