My name is Leila and I’m fundraising to avoid my disabled kid and I becoming homeless again. I’m asking for help with first and last months rent and moving assistance.

We have had a tough few years and now that I am finally getting back on my feet we are facing eviction again.

In 2023 I took time off work to care for my mother while she was dying of cancer. During that time we found out that our landlord was renting us an apartment in an illegal duplex so we were facing eviction. We couldn’t find anything that we could afford and ended up unhoused. It was while we were unhoused that my ex husband and kids father unexpectedly passed away leaving us with even less support.

Thanks to the kindness of a friend we managed to secure an apartment. Even though it was completely inaccessible for my disabled kid, it was a roof over our heads and a place to start our strange new life.

Within 4 months of living here I lost my job and started to get behind on rent and bills. Not having health insurance quickly builds a horrifying debt, even in Canada where we allegedly have free health care.

It took 8 long months to find a job at all, let alone one that pays a living wage and offers health insurance, and In that time the debt kept building, I got further behind on rent and bills. I’m so grateful to our pharmacist who allowed me to continue getting my child’s medication when I couldn’t afford it.

I have been slowly catching up on my debts since starting work and doing even better since the health plan kicked in.

Yet now my landlord has evicted us, saying he’s moving in to our apartment.

We have three months to find a home, (preferably accessible, but a home is a home), which means I’m asking for help with first and last months rent as well as moving costs.
