On January 24, a gas explosion in a Bronx high-rise triggered a four-alarm emergency that resulted in loss of life and injuries. In the middle of the night, my sister who is five months pregnant was suddenly forced to evacuate her home.
With no time to gather belongings, she grabbed her six-year-old child and her dog and fled the building, carrying the baby she is still growing inside her. While her apartment was not directly on fire, the damage to her home was severe due to flooding from firefighting efforts, leaving it unsafe and unlivable.
In a matter of hours, they lost access to their home and most of their belongings. Clothing, furniture, baby items, toys, and irreplaceable personal items were destroyed. They are now displaced and staying in temporary housing, trying to rebuild their lives from scratch.
Beyond the physical loss, the emotional impact has been overwhelming. Waking up to an emergency evacuation, fleeing in fear, and suddenly losing their sense of safety has taken a toll especially on a pregnant mother and a young child who is struggling to understand why everything changed overnight.
This family is facing trauma, uncertainty, and the daunting task of starting over while preparing to welcome a new baby. This fundraiser is to help cover immediate needs, replace essential items, and begin restoring stability after an experience that changed their lives in an instant.
Any support, whether through a donation or by sharing this fundraiser, means more than words can express. Thank you for helping this family take their first steps toward healing and rebuilding.
