Hi, my name is Michael Kim. For years my work as a drone operator allowed me to experience the world in ways I never imagined. I traveled, met incredible people, and captured moments that brought joy to others and purpose to my life. I was always focused on the next project, the next opportunity, the next adventure. What I never focused on was my own health.

Everything changed in an instant.

I recently experienced a life threatening medical crisis that led to an emergency hospitalization. In just a few weeks I went from living fully, working hard, and feeling healthy to being bed ridden and hospitalized with acute renal failure. My body filled with over 60 pounds of fluid. I was rushed into surgery to have a catheter placed so I could begin dialysis. During my stay I developed sepsis, which forced me into the hospital for almost a month while doctors tried to keep me stable. I went through multiple procedures, countless tests, and days where I was barely conscious or aware of what was happening.

I am now in full time medical recovery. I am on dialysis three times a week,follow a strict renal diet, have home nurse visits along with physical therapy because my muscles atrophied and my body is still weak. This has become my new reality as I wait for a biopsy and treatment plan that doctors hope will give me a chance to either eventually get off dialysis or prepare for a kidney transplant.

I am now on medical disability which limits my income too $1700 a month. With the rising medical bills on top of my regular bills, savings are getting depleted quite fast. I never thought I would be in a position where I needed to ask for help, but this experience has humbled me and changed the way I see life. I am fighting every day to recover, to regain my strength, and to eventually return to the passion that once brought me so much joy.
