My name is Andrea and I am writing on behalf of the Haughton family.

It has now been a couple of weeks since Hurricane Melissa tore through our family’s hometown of Maida District in Alexandria, St. Ann Parish, Jamaica, and the reality on the ground is still devastating.

Phones and internet have only been working in certain areas, leaving many families isolated.

Roofs are still missing. Crops that families rely on for food and income have been destroyed. Many homes remain without electricity or clean water. Access to grocery stores and basic supplies is extremely limited.

Recovery is slow, and many residents simply do not have the resources to rebuild on their own.

This small rural community means so much to our family. It’s where my mother-in-law grew up — a place where everyone knows each other and where neighbours truly rely on one another. We want to send meaningful, direct support to help the people of Maida District get back on their feet.

• Emergency food, clean water, and essential supplies

• Roofing materials and rebuilding damaged homes

• Support for farmers who lost crops and livestock

• Assistance for elderly residents, children, and families in greatest need

While the country received attention right after the hurricane, the reality is that media coverage fades long before recovery is complete.

We don’t want Maida District to be forgotten. As the dust settles, the community needs help now more than ever.

We, as a family, are planning to travel to Jamaica in January to deliver supplies, financial support, and resources directly to the community. We will also be helping hands-on with rebuilding — ensuring your support reaches the people who need it most.
