Bring Back House of Sound

House of Sound's history of providing good music to Portland residents spans over 6 decades.
House of Sound began as a record store, founded in 1964 by NFL Hall of Famer, Melvin Renfro, House of Sound would serve Portland's Black community as one of the very few locations where Black people could shop for music made and distributed by Black artists and record labels.
Mr. Renfro would transfer ownership of the record shop to David Dawson and Willie Harris, who ran House of Sound record store in the historic Albina neighborhood, right next door to the barbershop owned by Mr. Harris. Under their leadership, House of Sound would flourish as a business and become a landmark and safe haven for Portland's Black populous to congregate to not only listen to good music and get a decent hair cut, but also form long lasting bonds with other community members. For the next few decades, House of Sound would continue to sell music to the community until it closed its doors in 2000.
In 2009, House of Sound was reopened as a radio/internet radio station, still providing good music to the city, except over the airways. In 2015, House of Sound officially became a non-profit (501c3) and served as Portland's only free form, internet radio station, www.houseofsound.org
Houseofsound.org's last official broadcast was January 1, 2021. We are currently working on bringing Houseofsound.org back with two immediate goals:
1. Stand as a platform where Portland's BIPOC communities can have their voices heard:
During these trying times, it has been difficult for our BIPOC brothers and sisters to find avenues of expression and let their voices be heard. As the record store was once a safe haven for expression, Houseofsound.org plans to be such an avenue once again.
2. Provide the city of Portland with good music with an emphasis on Portland based artists:
We believe wholeheartedly that Portland is a hub for good music and we have amazing artists that deserve the shine that their talent merits. While our city is not as large as other cities, there is no reason that our music scene cannot be comparable to the likes of New York, Atlanta, or Los Angeles. We want to see the day when Portland artists do not have to relocate out of town to find success.
To achieve these two goals, Houseofsound.org will need to be rebuilt from the ground up. We have relocated and need to upgrade our studio with new equipment i.e. computers and laptops, microphones, headphones, etc. We need to update our website and obtain a new internet connection to broadcast music once more.
It is our hope that with community support, Houseofsound.org can begin broadcasting and playing music by July, 2021.
