Hello friends,
Earlier this week, our brother Alejandro's home in Boca Barranca, where his elderly parents have lived for over twenty years, was severely damaged by surging storm waters from Rio Barranca. Recent construction on a bridge east of their home reduced river flow by 30%, contributing to rising storm waters that directly impacted the property. The damage is significant, particularly to the kitchen and living room, leaving the home partially destroyed and our family feeling vulnerable about its future safety.
The river caused over 6 meters of destruction on the south side of the house, including significant damage to the kitchen and living room, leaving not only a partially destroyed home but also a deep sense of vulnerability regarding the future safety and stability of the property.
Before we can begin repairs, however, we urgently need to conduct an official geological study to help assess whether the river poses further potential risks to the home and determine how to protect the home from future damage. This study is critical to ensuring that any repairs we make are safe and sustainable in the long run.
His father is battling cancer and needs wheelchair to get around, so some of the home repair includes rails and wheelchair ramps in order for him to stay mobile. Due to being on a retirement income, the financial burden of this unexpected disaster is especially challenging for our family there. We are seeking to raise $30,000 to cover the costs of rebuilding and implementing necessary protections for the home. The breakdown of where this money will go is listed below:
- Geological Study - $1,000
- Building materials $17,000
- Infrastructure (riverbed and bedrock safety construction) - $8,000
- Labor costs - $4,000
Your support means the world to us and our family. Whether through a donation or by sharing our story with others, every bit of help brings us closer to restoring their safety and the stability of their home. We are deeply grateful for any assistance you can provide and appreciate your generosity and compassion.
GoFundMe currently does not support Costa Rican accounts. Therefore I'm starting this campaign here in the US and will personally transfer all funds raised to our family in Costa Rica through their son Alejandro.
Thank you for being a part of our journey towards recovery and rebuilding.
