On the night of May 3, 2026, a devastating fire destroyed Dolly Schafer’s family home in Plunketts Creek Township. Within minutes, the house was fully engulfed in flames. Thankfully, Dolly was alerted by her beloved dog, Pepper, and the two escaped safely together; a quick escape that likely saved her life.
For more than 40 years, Dolly’s home was a place filled with love and laughter. Family gathered there for holidays, celebrations, and everyday moments that became lifelong memories. The home itself was well known throughout the community, especially for the festive porch and yard decorations Dolly lovingly displayed for every holiday and season, bringing smiles and nostalgia to everyone who drove past.
The fire destroyed decades of family photographs, keepsakes, collections, and treasured belongings that can never truly be replaced. In just a few hours, Dolly lost not only her home but also so many irreplaceable pieces of her family’s history.
Many in the community know Dolly from her decades of service as an employee of the Montoursville School District, where she touched the lives of generations of children with her kindness, humor, and caring nature. She is also a devoted mother and caring grandmother who has always put others before herself.
This tragedy comes after another heartbreaking loss. Last May, Dolly lost her husband, Tom, who was well known for his beautiful gardens and popular roadside vegetable and blueberry stand. Even after a mountain mudslide severely damaged their property several years ago, Tom worked tirelessly to rebuild the gardens he loved.
While insurance may help cover some rebuilding costs, starting over after losing a lifetime of belongings is overwhelming. There are many immediate and ongoing needs as Dolly begins the long process of rebuilding her life.
Any donation, share, or message of support is deeply appreciated and means more than words can express during this incredibly difficult time.
Thank you for keeping Dolly and her family in your thoughts and prayers.
