Rebuilding Aore Breeze after Cyclone Harold
Donation protected
On April 6, 2020 we have been hit by Cyclone Harold. The power it went through Aore and South Santo was devastating. We were right at the centre of the storm and it is a miracle that there are no human casualties on Aore. Thanks to the early warnings people had a few days to prepare, but nothing we could do about the sheer force of nature. Starting in the morning the wind picked up and gave everyone a reminder that something big is coming. Around 11 Harold was here and torn down gigantic trees and turned them into matchsticks. By noon it became impossible to go outside, the air turned into a water blaster, and water sprinkled through the windows like in a shower. Then suddenly all stopped and became quiet. The silence was so eerie after the rambling of the sea and the screaming forest that it was surreal. No clouds, no wind, it almost looked like that it was over. About 20 minutes later, as the eye of the storm passed over us, the wind started to wreak havoc from the opposite direction with unbelievable intensity, which subsided an hour later.
Harold flattened the rain forest, mulched up its canopy, and left it unrecognisably barren. The roads are covered with debris, and the trunks of huge trees. All gardens are wiped out, so food will be scarce. Most of the birds will starve to death - parrots are already scavenging for food in flocks of a hundred.
I lost a roof, the cladding of a house, and two beams from the roof disappeared. All houses sustained water damage inside, all gutters are gone therefore drinking water supply is problematic.
In addition to the locked down borders due to the pandemic which brought tourism to a screeching halt, dealing with the aftermath of a Category 5 tropical cyclone is challenging.
I need whatever support you can spare to restore the beauty of Aore Breeze by the time of your visit, therefore I have set up a crowd funding campaign. For every $50 of donation I offer a free night for 2 people, staying at a self contained beach bungalow. The vouchers can be used up by April 6, 2025 - five years from the date of the cyclone. All stays must be booked in advance and dates are subject to availability. Make sure you leave your contact details when you make the donation and quote the fundraising campaign when making the reservation.
Thank you for your kind help in advance!
