Sunday evening we were decorating our Christmas tree, preparing for the holiday season like any family. The next day our tree was melted and the ornaments scorched from an electrical fire in our kitchen.

No one expects their dishwasher to start smoking and set their house on fire, but on the afternoon of December 8th that became our reality. While on the phone with 911, we were able to secure our pets and get everyone safely out of the house. As our rural volunteer firefighters arrived on the scene, the fire had spread to the kitchen before they were able to put out the flames. The electrical fire and smoke has damaged much of the home and completely destroyed the kitchen and living room.

Within hours we were homeless, living in a temporary hotel and scrapping for pet supplies for our two dogs and one cat. Schuyler's laptop that she uses for work (helping clients with marketing) was unfortunately destroyed and she's without a winter coat. As we were in the process of paying off debt, we only have $1,000 in emergency savings. This is not the Christmas/holiday season (or birthday -- Schuyler turns 33 on the 25th) we planned!

We humbly welcome people to donate whatever they are called to give. Much of our pet supplies were destroyed or damaged in the fire and we walked away with only the clothes on our back. Much of our initial costs are for the pets, clothing, and food (though we are limited to a microwave in our hotel room for the moment). Our housing insurance deductible is somewhat high at ~$2,500. Any amount helps us take care of our pets and readjust from the house fire.

We appreciate all the wonderful people in our lives who have stepped forward to offer support, donate, and give condolences. We are truly blessed to have all walked away safely. Now we're focused on surviving and slowly rebuilding.
