After surviving the Eaton Canyon fires and losing our home, my greatest fear wasn’t starting over — it was whether I could still give my daughter Joyce the education and support she needs to truly thrive.
My name is Victoria, and I am a single mother rebuilding our lives after disaster. Like so many families affected by the fire. Joyce and I lost more than our home - we lost stability, safety, and the school she grew to love, Rosebud Academy. One month following the fire, Joyce was accepted into Mayfield Junior School — a blessing in the midst of so much loss.
Shortly after enrolling, her NWEA assessment scores revealed she was performing nearly two grade levels behind. As her mother, I knew I needed answers. After further testing on January 23, Joyce received a formal diagnosis of dyslexia.
While difficult to hear, the diagnosis brought clarity — and a plan.
Specialists have recommended an intensive 18-month remediation program that includes:
• Susan Barton literacy tutoring twice per week (a structured program designed specifically for dyslexic learners)
• Math tutoring twice per week to rebuild foundational skills
The goal is not simply for Joyce to “get by,” but to bring her performance from below grade level into the mid-to-upper range — to at least 75% proficiency — so she can move forward confidently and not fall further behind in future grades.
Joyce attends Mayfield with the help of financial aid, for which we are deeply grateful. However, the school does not provide or cover specialized one-on-one remediation services. All tutoring must be outsourced and privately funded.
These services cost nearly $1,000 per month and will be required consistently over the next 18 months.
I have reached out to nonprofit organizations and community resources, but we have not been able to secure assistance.
At the same time, I am a full-time student working to build a more stable future for our family — with limited resources, I am stretching every part of myself to make sure Joyce has what she needs - not just to catch up, but to believe in her own brilliance again.
Joyce is bright, creative, and full of promise. With the right support, she will not only catch up — she will soar.
Every dollar given goes directly toward her tutoring and remediation. If you feel moved to support her journey, please know that no gift is too small. Each act of kindness becomes part of the foundation we are rebuilding beneath her feet.
From a mother who is doing everything she can,
thank you for helping my daughter rise.
With gratitude,
Victoria
