Rebuild Zion Canyon Medical Clinic

Donation protected

For the first time since 1984, the Zion Canyon Medical Clinic has been forced to close their doors. We hope that this is only temporary. On Tuesday, June 29,2021 a massive flash flood swept through the community of Springdale, Utah and the clinic sustained substantial damage. Two inches of muddy flood water saturated the floors and swept away the detached storage unit. Our two full-time medical assistants ad a total loss of their vehicles due to the impact of flood water, rocks and debris.

For the past 37 years the Zion Clinic has been providing urgent and primary care to Zion National Park visitors as well as local residents. The Zion Clinic is a small private clinic that provides a BIG public service and receives no federal, state, county or city funding, thus limiting their financial resources. Clinic services are provided by a local long-time medical team consisting of Mike McMahan, a physician’s assistant and his wife Helen McMahan, a family nurse practitioner. They really enjoy their work of saving vacations and making local’s lives better. They especially enjoy treating local patients. The McMahans find it very rewarding to have known many of their patients since they were children and are still caring for them 35 plus years later. Local patients know that when it comes to having a blood test or imaging study, they will receive a personal telephone call from their provider with results, usually by the next day. They strive to keep costs as low as possible for under- and uninsured people. They have always made themselves available for acute care after hours. Because the cost of running a rural medical clinic does not bring in high revenues, Helen and Mike both volunteer their time to provide excellent patient care and personally perform the ancillary chores involved in running a clinic They can afford staff salaries, medical equipment, supplies and maintenance expenses, but profits are marginal and the costs to repair damages incurred by the recent flood are staggering.

For the first time in our history, we are reaching out to our community of supporters for financial donations to cover unexpected costs related to the recent disaster. We are passionate about our services and recognize that our clinic is an integral part of the Zion Canyon community of visitors and residents. We want to continue providing crucial medical care but have been advised that total repair costs may approach $50,000. Our goal is to have the clinic up and running as soon as possible so we can continue to do our life’s work.
