Rebuild the Whale Research and Education Centre
For the past three decades the Cook Islands Whale Research and Education Centre has informed, involved, and inspired people about whales, dolphins, and the marine ecosystems they inhabit. The Centre has served as a place for education, raising awareness, and bringing students, government, tourists, teachers, research assistants, scientists, and locals of all ages, together. It has provided a safe, learning environment for children after school, and school groups during school hours. The Cook Island's locals over the years have learned to care for the environment and take “ownership” of their whales, dolphins, sharks, & turtles.
Suffering from epilepsy, brain surgery, and multiple injuries, Nan Hauser (Yes, the one you all saw on social media that was saved by the whale from a tiger shark https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTw8MR67xv8) has kept the project above water!
In December 2017 the Education Centre was robbed, destroyed, and vandalized, leaving us only to hope that one day generous donations will help us rebuild so that we may carry on the legacy of sharing knowledge about the ocean, its inhabitants, the shipwrecks, the geology, and the whales. We, the Board of Directors for the Center for Cetacean Research & Conservation and the Cook Islands Whale Research & Education Centre, encourage you to support us in the process of rebuilding our beloved Centre. We hope that we can continue to foster a space for people to come together, sharing their thoughts and concerns to make a difference to the planet and the future of our oceans.
100% of donations to this project go directly to research and education. The team has worked diligently over three decades for the love of whales and a desire to protect them.
