My name is Krista, and although you might not know me, you have likely been moved and inspired by the amazing photography of my brilliant mother, Giovanna.

This morning I woke up in Australia to the devastating news that Mum's beautiful, tranquil photography gallery in Bali was burnt to the ground overnight due to an electrical fire. I have spent so many peaceful afternoons painting in that gallery with my Mum and her gorgeous staff, and knowing that it has all disappeared overnight is heartbreaking.

This is a message from Mum:

"Early this morning, during severe storms and high winds in Bali, the Giovanna Photography Gallery and Coffee House was destroyed by an electrical fire that spread rapidly through our main power box.

Within a very short time, two beautiful old Javanese Joglo buildings — which housed our Photography Gallery, Coffee House, Office, and Printing Studio — were burnt to the ground.

For over 10 years, this space has been our creative home. It held our work, our archives, our equipment, our prints, and welcomed a community of photographers, artists, friends, and visitors from around the world.

We are deeply grateful that the local Banjar and wider Balinese community responded immediately and helped prevent the fire from spreading further. Most importantly, no one was hurt.

However, we are now facing the devastating reality of having lost everything — with no insurance in place.

We are starting again from zero.

We are raising funds to rebuild the gallery and coffee house, and to replace essential equipment including printers, computers, and editing tools so that Giovanna and her photography team can begin working again.

The loss of artworks, memories, books and equipment is going to be difficult to overcome, but as of right now there will be no more Giovanna Photography without the help of her community and admirers. I have seen my Mum work tirelessly to build this legacy of visual art for so many years, and it breaks my heart to know how much she has lost.
