Nick Wilson was just a teenager when we first met him through a mutual love of BMX. He was an avid rider and spent many hours building trails at Trout Pond in Newark Valley. After graduating, Nick enlisted in the service where he became an elite Naval Operations Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician. Sadly, Nick lost his life in the line of duty and passed in action in Iraq in early 2006. At that time, back in his hometown of Newark Valley, NY, the beginning idea of building a skatepark was being born. Because of the timing, it was obvious the park should be a memorial to honor Nick and his love of BMX.
In 2009, the park was built by Nike who loved the premise as well, and the park has been in operation since. However, after 17 years and the negative affects of New York weather, the skatepark that serves as a memorial is in need of repairs. We are asking for funds to cover damaged plywood sub-flooring, Skatelite plywood top flooring, weather sealant, and miscellaneous materials such as screws. On this 250th anniversary of our country's independence, it seems especially fitting we rebuild the park to preserve for future generations of young Nicks, and to continue honoring his memory. We are after all, the home of the free, because of the brave.
We invite everyone to donate, share this fundraiser, and volunteer to help rebuild the park. Your support will honor Nick’s memory and keep his spirit alive in our community.
