Rebuild Larry's Life After Fire Tragedy

My name is Melissa Bonk and I’m starting this GoFundMe on behalf of my Father, Larry Kjeldsen.

On the evening of December 4, 2024, a fire started in my Dad’s next-door neighbor’s condominium, which is located at 5700 W. 128th Street in Crestwood, Illinois. My Dad heard someone yelling for help. He opened his door and saw that the entire hallway was filled with smoke and his neighbor was laying in the doorway (in the condo where the fire originated). My Dad didn’t have much time to react as he saw his neighbor’s unit engulfed in flames, so he dragged the neighbor to safety outside of the building before Crestwood Police and Fire Department arrived.

My Dad was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center for smoke inhalation while his neighbor was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

The fire spread quickly and caused explosions causing catastrophic damage to the 12-unit building, injuring 4 people, and killing several pets. Nineteen people have been displaced as a result of the fire, and the building has been deemed uninhabitable. My Dad lost all of his furniture and personal belongings. My Dad is able to recover very few items but the remainder of his unit suffered too much damage.
