Rebuild Homes for Canterbury Families
Donation protected
On Sunday, July 6th, Tropical Storm Chantal devastated Chapel Hill and Carrboro, including the Canterbury Townhome community, located 5 minutes from UNC. After 9 inches of rain, 28 homes were flooded with 3-4 feet of bacteria- and fish-filled water from the nearby creek, which had never been able to rise above the hills the townhomes were built on. The Canterbury community has come together to support our neighbors, many of whom are UNC students and employees, but the sheer size of the destruction is overwhelming. We have not received any state aid or other disaster relief funds to date, and the insurance companies don’t want to pay. FEMA has not even acknowledged the terrible flooding in our state. Our town’s garbage trucks were also destroyed in the flooding, so we have had to pay out of pocket to rent dumpsters to remove the filthy furniture and soaked drywall. We are asking for your donations to help feed and house our displaced neighbors and to fund the reconstruction of our wonderful neighborhood. Your fellow Tarheels need you! Please, help us restore our community.
At least 40 people, including children, were displaced from their homes. Each of the flooded units lost their living room, kitchen, dining room, laundry room, a half bathroom, and a patio. Some residents lost their vehicles. Homeowners will need to have their flood-impacted outlets rewired, get a specialist in to remediate mold, and purchase plumbing, insulation, sheetrock, flooring, appliances, furniture, and more. Cutting out the drywall and insulation (without cutting electric or plumbing) typically costs over $1,000 per unit. Quotes for the safest rewiring option have been up to $8,000 already. Most of these repairs and replacements require expertise we do not have and will need to hire.
We have nowhere to store the supplies safely on site away from the elements. We need to raise the funds to purchase these supplies as we are rebuilding the homes. If you can, please donate. If you cannot, please share our GoFundMe. We appreciate any help so much!
