My 90-year-old grandmother, who lives in St. Elizabeth Accompong town close to Santa cruz Jamaica, has been devastated by the effects of Hurricane Melissa. Her home which had a weak foundation has been severely damaged. The powerful winds tore the roof completely off , kitchen and bathroom have been destroyed, and the heavy rains have flooded the entire house. Almost everything she owned has been soaked or destroyed.
My grandmother is also diabetic and depends on insulin that must be kept refrigerated. Since the hurricane hit, the power has been out across the community and the road has collapsed further leaving no access for anyone to leave or enter. The light poles were brought down by the strong winds, leaving her without electricity or a way to keep her medication safe. Right now, she has no secure shelter, no bed to sleep on, and no access to her insulin or other basic needs.
Me as her granddaughter and family in the UK is doing everything we can to get her help, but the situation is urgent and supplies are limited, and communication has been difficult as of now we’re raising funds to help rebuild her home, replace her essentials, and ensure she gets medical care and proper storage for her medications.
Every donation no matter how small will go directly toward providing her with food, clean water, medications and a safe place to stay. My grandmother has always been a strong and loving woman who has cared for others her whole life. Now, she needs our care and support more than ever.
Thank you for taking the time to read her story and for any help you can offer during this difficult time.
