On Tuesday, June 26, 2018, the waters of the Rolling Fork River flowed into the grounds of the Forkland Community Center. The basement, in which many events/activities took place, was flooded with nearly 4-6 ft of water in some areas. Countless appliances, books, tables, chairs, and supplies were lost in this event. The Forkland Community Center was founded in 1971 after the community (of Boyle, Marion, and Casey Counties) purchased the soon to be abandoned school building, in which was founded in 1927. Since then, the community center has held numerous fundraisers throughout the year including festivals, dinners, seminars, classes, concerts, and more.

In May 2010, the community center experienced a similar flood that had very similar outcomes. With aid from FEMA, the community center got back on its feet. After some time, FEMA officials contacted the Forkland Board of Trustees with an ultimatum: pay for the damage of 2010, or purchase flood insurance from them. The board then approved the purchase of flood insurance.  One detail was missed, however, and now in the time of need, anything more than 2 inches below the ground, was not covered in our policy. While the insurance will pay for the clean up, it is only the beginning for the community center to return to its glory.
