Last night on January 29, 2020 the Amerasian Christian Academy (ACA), a one-of-a-kind school for marginalized children in Tongduch'on, South Korea, was destroyed by a tragic fire. Thankfully, no one was hurt and all the students were on winter break. We call on your hearts to help us rebuild ACA, so that students have a school, a safe space and a community to come back to.
This building, historically known as the Shalom House, a US military Christian service center, has served as a safe place, community and school for mixed Korean children and the children of migrant workers in Korea who are often discriminated against in Korean schools and Korean society. The school officially began in 1999 through the tireless efforts of James Kang-McCann and Hyekyong Kim (lovingly called Mr. and Mrs. Kang) who began their mission to help and educate Amerasians in the early 1990s, starting with a pre-school/daycare built by Mrs. Kang who saw the need to support Korean single mothers. As a Black-Korean Amerasian, Mr. Kang who was born and raised in Korea until he was a teenager, knew firsthand about the racism and discrimination that Amerasians and anyone who was considered not Korean experience on a daily basis. Together they created a school to empower young people and to give them opportunities that they would otherwise not have. ACA has proudly graduated many students and offers K-12 education with a US curriculum at a low cost to students. This school is currently home to 75 students. Everything in the school was destroyed, so please help us rebuild the school and purchase the things that the school needs to serve its incredible and courageous students.
If you would prefer to send a check, please send it to the following address. This church supports the Amerasian Christian Academy and will send the funds directly to the school: Make check payable to: A.H.C
