On September 2, 2013, I was on the way to my last swim & sand volleyball party of the summer. I decided to stop by a walk-in medical clinic because I had been feeling rough that weekend. They ran some blood work and found that my white blood cell count was 72,000. They sent me straight to the emergency room at Vanderbilt Medical Center. When I got my labs done there, just over an hour later, my white blood cell count had increased to 98,000.
I was diagnosed that night with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). The doctors told me I had been sick a few weeks, and, without treatment, would die in only a few more weeks. I was hospitalized immediately to begin treatment. It was decided that my case most resembled pediatric ALL and I should undergo the pediatric chemotherapy protocol.
Since this protocol is geared toward the young, responsive bodies of children, its very intense and aggressive. At the time, I was 25 and in good shape overall, but the treatment has been brutal. After I finish this two and half year chemo regimin, I'll be in remission. But I'll also have damaged organs and systems that desperately need repair.
That's where you come in! I plan to be admitted to the Oasis of Hope Hospital in Tijuana, Mexio (http://www.oasisofhope.com/)
where I will undergo treatments to rebuild my immune system, nervous system, and organ function. They have a proven track record of healing cancers and lessening the chance of recurrence.
We need $35,000 to make this happen.
With the help of so many, we've managed to lower our expenses, pay off bills and live on a tight budget in this costly season. But we still need financial help to make this trip a reality. Chemo treatments are ending in January 2016 and we'd like to get to Oasis of Hope by late spring the same year.
Obviously, we won't be able to use our health insurance to pay for this needed treatment but we are trusting that God will provide the money to pay the full amount.
Thank you for reading this and for all your support and care during these difficult years.
Much Love and appreciation,
Rebekah Clair Hanes (Poteet)
