Rebecca works for the El Paso, Texas, police department as a civilian employee and, as such, was considered an essential worker, unable to work from home. In June of 2020, Rebecca went to the hospital with symptoms of COVID-19. She was in and out of the hospital for the next month, testing positive for the virus in July. In September, she had a life-threatening pulmonary embolism and was hospitalized again for a longer stretch of time. Following her hospitalization, Rebecca needed further treatment and was put on administrative leave without pay from the department. She had been intending to return to her work at the police department this week. However, after coming off the blood thinners last week, Rebecca was readmitted to the hospital with another blood clot in her leg. After additional tests, doctors found a mass in her chest. She is currently undergoing further tests to determine her diagnosis and prognosis. Doctors expect that she will need extensive treatment.
Due to the incredible hardship Rebecca has faced over the last year, she is now unable to pay the deductibles for her medical bills or the mortgage on the house she shares with her husband, who works as a civilian on an army base nearby. She will likely need to travel for additional treatment, as medical centers that specialize in long-haul COVID are few and far between.
