Andy and Rebecca were excited and nervous when they found out they were expecting a baby just before he was deployed. The long months of deployment went by and as Rebecca's due date came closer, Andy was making plans to travel home after the baby arrived to meet his new daughter.
A routine checkup with the maternity doctor at 37 weeks revealed that Rebecca was losing weight and the baby's amniotic sac was extremely low on fluid, so the doctor decided the best thing to do was induce labor and deliver the baby as soon as possible. The next morning, the doctors delivered Rae Lynn by emergency c-section as her daddy watched from overseas while waiting for a flight. Baby Rae Lynn was born 5lbs 1oz but was in perfect health.
As the nurses were cutting the umbilical cord and taking pictures for Andy, Rebecca went into cardiac arrest. Her heart had stopped. The baby and family was rushed from the room and the doctors performed CPR and eventually used a defibrillator to restart her heart.
Since then, Rebecca has gone into cardiac arrest two more times and each time the doctors have been able to restart her heart. She has been moved to a hospital in Omaha to use the ECMO machine that takes the stress off of her heart so that it can hopefully heal.
Andy was finally able to make it home and see his newborn daughter before traveling to be with his wife. Rae Lynn and her older sister Adelle are in the care of family members, who have found themselves caring for a newborn baby and toddler unexpectedly.
