Rebecca's Traumatic Brain Injury Recovery Fund

BRIEF OVERVIEW:

Rebecca was in a severe longboarding (skateboard) accident in April,  resulting in multiple skull fractures, a traumatic brain injury (TBI), a severe concussion, and partial hearing loss. The neurologist informed us that it will take one-two years for complete brain healing.  Rebecca has 5-6 therapy/doctor sessions each week, with other miscellaneous appointments sprinkled into the mix.  She cannot drive or work at this time. As a result, medical related bills, and other expenses, are adding up and causing additional mental stress, which affects her emotions, and leads to more brain strain. We (her parents) are setting up this account to help alleviate the burden of bills she cannot pay, ultimately enabling her to rest and allow her brain to recover.

OUR REQUESTS:

First, we need your prayers for Rebecca’s healing and recovery, and that she will see the faithfulness of God throughout this ordeal. Second, if you are able to help financially towards her medical bills (any amount is a blessing) we all would be very grateful.  Thank you!

THE INJURY DETAILS:

Rebecca sustained three cranial fractures; a traumatic brain injury (TBI) with bleeding, bruising and swelling of the brain; a concussion; and a dislocation of the ossicle, resulting in partial hearing loss in one ear.  The fall also injured her neck, shoulder,  hip, knee, and foot.

The healing process is slow, and the therapy sessions are mentally demanding.  Rebecca wrestles with many symptoms of brain injury: anxiety, depression, and panic attack, as well as struggling with memory issues, reading challenges, light and sound sensitivity, stimulus overload, and headaches, as well as others.

ONGOING MEDICAL CARE:

Rebecca is currently receiving:

* Speech therapy (for cognition, memory, and reading)
* Occupational therapy (focusing on vision, eye-teaming and movement)
* Physical therapy (to help regain movement and strength)
* Massage therapy
* Cranial Sacral therapy
* Acupuncture treatments
* Chiropractic adjustments

She's also seen by: a neurologist, audiologist, ENT, orthopedist, primary care physician, and a naturopath.

While Rebecca's medical insurance covers a good portion of her major medical appointments, some of her therapies/treatments are not covered.  She's also been prescribed long-term medication and supplements which are not covered by her medical insurance.

THE HERE AND NOW:

Rebecca is diligently working on all of her therapies, and hopes to beat the predicted recovery time.  However, brain recovery is not a race; it is not like training for a competitive sport.  In fact, her doctors and therapists have told her it’s the opposite.  If she pushes too hard, she can overwork her brain and end up regressing.  It’s a delicate balance of exercising the brain and resting.

Trying to reenter this fast-paced world is exhausting and requires a lot of determination. We have seen Rebecca make some great progress over the past few months, and we celebrate each recovery milestone.

Even though Rebecca is making great strides, it will still be months before she can attempt to work again, even part-time.  Thus, the GoFundMe account.  If you feel led to help Rebecca financially during this time, it would be a great encouragement and will also help put her mind to rest!

Thank you so much!
