Rebecca's Road to Recovery!
Donation protected
In September of 2016 Rebecca was diagnosed with monoclonal gammopathy undetermined significance (MGUS), which is considered the very beginning of multiple myeloma (MM). Most people who receive a diagnosis of MGUS do not progress to multiple myeloma but in early July 2017 Rebecca received the news that she had progressed to MM. As she said, ‘I always knew I was special’.
She immediately started an oral and injectable chemo protocol. She is now in the process of switching to a new protocol because she is not responding the way her oncologist had hoped she would be at this point.
In December Rebecca will move her care to Mayo and start the process to receive a stem cell aka bone marrow transplant mid to late December. The transplant will be done on an outpatient basis - phew!
Once the transplant is completed she will be out of work for about 3 months as she tries to rebuild her immune system and get back to some state of normal. ‘Normal’ usually happens 6-12 months after a stem cell transplant.
When we asked Rebecca about setting up a GoFundMe page, her initial response was a big fat no. She felt uncomfortable asking others for help, especially financial support.
But after talking with her and allowing her some time to think about it she has agreed to let us help her.
Two months before she was diagnosed with MM she had to take a very large cut in salary, couple this with weekly injection costs of $1,300.00 and a monthly injection cost of $1,800.00. The transplant will cost about $250,000 and we have no idea how much insurance will cover right now. If the insurance company covers it like they should, they should cover 80% leaving a $50,000 bill. Every little bit will help.
Thank you for your consideration.
